\nAccording to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,492 km² (576 mi²). 1,490 km² (575 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.13% water.

Demographics

\nAs of the census² of 2000, there are 13,843 people, 5,188 households, and 3,507 families residing in the county. The population density is 9/km² (24/mi²). There are 5,611 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (10/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 92.99% White, 0.36% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 1.70% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 3.40% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. 6.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. There are 5,188 households out of which 32.80% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.50% are married couples living together, 7.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.40% are non-families. 27.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.04. In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 12.30% from 18 to 24, 25.00% from 25 to 44, 20.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.10 males. The median income for a household in the county is $35,914, and the median income for a family is $44,199. Males have a median income of $30,467 versus $22,690 for females.
